Since Hilton Head is a beautiful place for vacation, people always fail to draw an itinerary to fit their needs. This post will help you understand the stunning historical locations of Hilton Head. Create your own itinerary and explore the Historical locations in Hilton Head. Before Hilton Head Island earned its reputation as a destination with opulent hotels, outstanding golf courses, verdant gardens, and hundreds of shops and eateries, it was an island with a rich history and culture. Next time you travel, look for and learn about that culture. For now, we listed some of the amazing historical locations like old one room school house, forts, chapels and more to explore in Hilton Head. Zion Chapel of Ease and Cemetery The chapel, which was formerly a part of the Episcopal Church, is now little more than its silent and eerie cemetery. The Baynard Mausoleum, the island's oldest building, is located in that cemetery. Forts Hilton Head Island had forts before its beaches were covered in hotels and vacation rentals. It was strategically significant for protecting the South Carolina mainland due to its position and size. Along the coastline, the Sea Islands form a chain. You can control who enters and leaves by sea if you control the confined canals that connect the islands. Cherry Hill Old One Room School House On Hilton Head Island's northernmost point, the 75-year-old Cherry Hill School has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. After the Gullah community donated funds to purchase the site for the Beaufort County School District, the one-room schoolhouse was constructed in 1937. In exchange, the district worked with locals to build the school. There were six grades and roughly 25 kids. Chalkboards were the only objects mounted on the walls. The school still has the little wooden table where the first-graders were seated. Mitchelville More than 1,000 residents of Hilton Head Island were among the first slaves to be set free during the Civil War when Union soldiers captured the island on November 7, 1861, during the Battle of Port Royal. As the country's first freedmen's settlement, they established Mitchelville. You may drive through the churches, residences, and school building that are still standing there or stop in Mitchelville on one of the Gullah history excursions offered on the island. Harbor Town Lighthouse and Museum The famous lighthouse at Harbour Town wasn't even intended to be a lighthouse. When Hilton Head was initially formed as a vacation destination, it was constructed as a tourist attraction. However, it in and of itself is a significant aspect of Hilton Head Island's past. Exploring historical locations in Hilton Head vacation will be one of the best things you can do.
